Oh one think you could try is updating or downgrading the router firmware, I believe there are a few forums which discuss this.

I've had great service from them, but twice the routers have let me down (although you can buy and use your own router)

I wonder if you could borrow another router and try that? I'd love to use my Airport Extreme but I would need an ADSL modem :(

I don't see why O2 won't give you another router, and I don't see how you can abuse a 4-5Mb connection.....

Thanks for your reply, I have tried the wired AND wireless connection with desktop PC's, Laptops, iphones, my Macbook Pro and also friends laptops and all are the same. ie very slow speeds. O2 insist it is due to abuse of their 'unlimited' download package. At the same time they say that they can see that 4-5Mb is reaching the router. Seems likely it's a router problem to me too, but they won't do anything. It's disappointing as I have always liked O2. They say I can switch provider for no charge but ideally I would like them to at least try replacing the router first.
At present I am looking round for another provider I feel I can trust. NOT easy!!!

Interesting experiences Clive, do you have the white Thompson router? I'm on the 20Mb package (was 16Mb) and I get around 12Mb average and thats to a busy city centre exchange. Its faster when O2 have their equipment in the exchange - perhaps they are just using BT equipment in your exchange hence the slow speed. Max of 1Mb to the laptop is strange - are you using a Mac or PC? If PC check that your antivirus or firewall isn't affecting it. Get somebody else to bring their computer and attach it to your router, if the same then you have an issue with the router.

I have been on O2 for two months. was just about OK, though not as good as with SKY (who I hate!) to begin with but speeds have gone down and down.
O2 say it is due to people abusing the unlimited downloads and that they can't do anything to help. They also say that tests show that I am getting 4.5Mb to my router, which is near the maximum I can expect. If this is true, why do I get a max of 1Mb to my laptop, whether its wired or wireless? surely its a problem with the router? O2 say they have decided its the network problem and they won't try to fix it.
I have been with O2 for my mobile phone for a while and I like them, but now I feel they have let me down.
Very disappointed and I can't recommend them to anyone

I'm just picking a provider for a new house next year, and it was going to be Be*, before I remembered you'd had good experiences with O2 (I didn't realise they were the same company, in a weird way).

It'll probably be O2 now: £9.79/month for 20 meg down & 1.3 up is very impressive. Thanks for the post :)

No problems here. Looks like the problem was caused by this http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/10/23/global_crossing_docklands_break/ - so appears to be a temporary issue affecting certain areas, not UK wide.

However, there are now big problems for a lot of O2 users who are being disconnected every 5 mins.

Not good at all. UK wide. O2/Bethere have gone from awesome to awful!
