Burgerdoodles iPhone case by Jon Burgerman
2If you follow me on Twitter you’ll know that I am a fan of the talented artist Jon Burgerman. Okay, a huge fan. I’ve admired his work for some time now, being very much into buying the urban vinyl toys that he and so many other artists create wonderful pieces for. However it wasn’t until late last year that I discovered he had a large range of merchandise on his Burgerplex website which propelled me into super huge fan and hoarder of ANYTHING that carries his Doodles artwork from mugs to books – and just check out the huge poster on my home office wall.
Two weeks ago his online store Twitter account tweeted a little sneak preview of the box of the new Burgerdoodles iPhone 4/4S cover. Naturally my ears pricked up and I have been checking the site almost daily, keen to purchase one as soon as it was launched.
I’m generally not a fan of iPhone cases. I buy a cover/sleeve so that I can see and feel the beauty of the iPhone in my hand. However, I got bored with abiding by that particular rule and decided that a case probably isn’t that bad. I can take it off when I want and admire the iPhone in all its magnificent naked glory whenever I’m feeling, you know, weird. It’s not superglued on there, so let’s give it a try at least once.
On Thursday the Burgerdoodles case landed on the Burgerplex website for a snip at just £15. I purchased it and it arrived fresh and early this morning with two free packs of Burgerman stickers thrown in! The Burgerdoodles case is…
- Designed for iPhone 4 and 4S
- Includes FREE screen protector and screen wipe
- Protects four corners and back from dirt, scratches and bite marks
- Super smooth polycarbonate case
- Snug fit, no extra bulk
- Ideal for expensive smart phones that crack too easily
I couldn’t wait to snap it onto my phone and wow, it looks pretty amazing. I’ll shut up now and show you some photos.
Because I tend to carry my iPhone in a pocket when I’m out and about, I like having all round protection. With the Burgerdoodle case on it’s just a teeny bit too big now to fit into my SwitchEasy Duo case which is a pretty snug fit all on its own. I have ordered a neat denim iPhone 4S case from Etsy which will hopefully be here soon and you’ll no doubt here from me on here when it is.
Head over to Burgerplex and pick up the ONLY accessory your iPhone will ever want to be seen wearing.
Now all I need is a sleeve for my iPad and MacBook Air…and something tells me it won’t be too long of a wait for that…
In search of the perfect iPad pen
1Finding the perfect iPad pen feels like a never-ending task. It seems that one pen has something about it I don’t like and end up wishing that two could be combined with their best bits to make the ultimate pen. I have read reviews, watched YouTube video demonstrations and nobody has the definitive winner.
My first proper experience with an iPad pen was the AluPen some 9 months ago. It had a decent nib, was great for writing but it didn’t feel like a pen in my hand. The weight was okay, but the thickness of the barrel didn’t trick me into thinking I was using a pen. So I asked Twitter for their recommendations. The Cosmonaut and the Wacom Bamboo were amongst the highest recommended. I also did my own research and came across the Griffin GC16050 pen for iPad. It was priced at around £8 on Amazon at the time so I ordered it for its excellent price point and the fact it was white which matched my iPad.

It arrived next day and though the nib was on par with the AluPen, the barrel is more pen-like. It’s not very long so again it’s not giving me that ‘real pen’ feel. However, I found it quite accurate when I was note taking and drawing which is ultimately the aim. I started using it in place of the AluPen in Draw Something and found I could fluidly draw comfortably with it. I drew my favourite picture so far in DS using it which I think you’ll agree didn’t do a bad job…

However, being keen to try out as many new writing gizmos as I could, I noticed that the Wacom Bamboo pen for iPad, which was previously priced at around £25 on Amazon, had been reduced to £17 for a limited period. The reviews left by customers on Amazon weren’t as glowing as the ones I’d heard from friends I know who were using them, but at this price point I couldn’t afford to wait and wonder, so quickly placed my order.
When it arrived the next day I felt it was quality from the moment I looked at the box. I pulled it out and I thought I’d found perfection. It looked great, it felt great in my hand, it had that much wanted pen weight to it and the nib was smaller than the others I’d tried. Here’s a photo of the AluPen and Wacom Bamboo side by side.

I used it very quickly on the iPhone screen and believed it would be the pen to end my experiment with all other pens. Then I opened up Draw Something and tried to draw. I wasn’t getting precision, the nib felt extremely soft and almost sloppy. It was very squishy and at times it felt like the nib was coming away from the actual pen. I was so disappointed because everything else was perfect apart from the part that really matters – the bit that touches the screen.
I used it for less than a day, finding myself setting it down and picking up the significantly cheaper Griffin more often which allowed me to draw much more accurately. I put the Wacom back into its box and it’s currently winging its way to its new owner as I type.
My Dad is now the new owner of the AluPen so sadly I can’t show a side by side photo of that and the Griffin, but there’s not too much difference between the nibs.

I was so impressed with the Griffin that I bought one for my brother, for his Draw Something efforts on his iPhone. Speaking of Draw Something, feel free to add purplepizzaeater to your challengers should you want to see rather impressive drawings of Pikachu and Garfield, but mostly badly drawn stick people.
So, for now I am happy with the Griffin iPad pen. My eye will always be wandering for something else due to my curious nature and quest for pen perfection and I wouldn’t be too surprised that if at some point I will give the Jot by Adonit a try, so stay tuned.
iPad. It’s a Family Affair
7Towards the end of last year my Dad showed an interest in a reasonably priced netbook or a tablet computer. It would have to have been something fairly easy to use right out of the box given my Dad, in his mid-sixties, has had very limited experience with computers. What sounds like it would be perfect for him? That’s right, the iPad.
Because the release of iPad 3/iPad HD … no, the new iPad, was just around the corner I managed to persuade him to hold off and he could have my iPad 2 for a special daughter-father deal. He has Multiple Sclerosis and as a result has dexterity problems, so I was a little concerned that the iPad would be a bit too slippy for him to hold. I ordered a very inexpensive silicone cover to slip it into, making it easier for him to grip.
So, when March 16th came around for my new iPad to be delivered, I handed my Mum and Dad their “new” iPad 2. I showed them the basics and straight away my Dad flew into Google Maps, pinching and zooming his way through streets around the country he hadn’t been to for years. It was an amazing sight to see him so easily get to grips with the gestures he needed to perform to make something bigger, or make something smaller. He had no other experience with the iPad before this – the ‘teaching’ process was almost non-existent.
It’s fair to say my Dad is completely addicted to his iPad now. He uses it for browsing the internet, using Google Maps, watching Netflix and playing a multitude of games, whereas my Mum loves it for access to her music. Some things can have a novelty effect and I thought after the first few days that it would spend its life as a mug coaster on the coffee table, but I rarely see my Dad without it in his hands these days.
The new iPad which I have been using since launch day, is a delight. The Retina Display quite simply is worth the upgrade alone and despite my concerns that it may not be enough of a reason to upgrade, the moment I switched it on and saw the crispness of the text and clarity of photos, I knew I’d made the right decision. If I look at my parents iPad 2, the text immediately looks fuzzy. Of course before the new iPad came along the screen looked fine to me. Amazing how overnight my great piece of tech became the second great piece of tech.
Here are some photos of the new iPad.
Taking photos on the iPad’s 5MP camera is not something I thought I’d do often, but it begs to have photos taken with it and it’s extremely useful now that I don’t have a separate digital camera. This means that if I want to take a photo of an app on my iPhone for article purposes, I can do so without worry that the quality wouldn’t look great. In fact I took this photo using the new iPad camera.
The 1080p video recording on the new iPad is also a delight. I took this today in the blustery wind…
Make sure you select the HD quality – for some reason YouTube (and Vimeo) don’t allow HD video embedding as standard. You can also view nice and big on Vimeo, here!
So, now that my parents are iPad users and my brother and his wife have recently gone iPhone, it’s going to be much quieter when it comes to answering family tech support calls.
Google+
5When Google+ went beta last year I was invited in to have a look around. I created my profile, added friends to circles and it wasn’t long before I thought “Now what?”. I couldn’t see what G+ was trying to be or where it would fit into my life. Admittedly I am still questioning this, but their recent re-design this week has helped me focus a little more.
The layout of Google+ prior to this update didn’t do anything for me. It didn’t feel nice or comfortable. Put simply it didn’t make me want to use it. It’s hard to say exactly what it is about this new design that works for me, but it feels more interactive, like there’s more to see and touch. It feels more organised, it’s like Google+ finally grew up.
The ability to create a cover photo to one’s profile feels like another step in the right direction. It feels more personal to me, so naturally the photo I have chosen as my cover is one I recently took of my beloved Converse.

There are a number of my friends who have used Google+ on a daily basis for sharing things. Some moved away from Facebook completely to use G+, others creating a profile but leaving soon after. I have tried persuading some friends to give Google+ at least a go, but Facebook is now so ingrained into their daily lives that it’s difficult for them to be open to the idea of yet another “social network”.
Twitter is and always will be my number one go-to social network for all the wonderfully rapid interaction and easy-ways-to-access it reasons, but I’m starting to see where Google+ may also start to matter in my life. Photos that I may want to share with my closer friends, but not my wider followers on Twitter or Flickr. I can be as open or as private as I want on Google+, allowing certain circles to access things that others cannot. This is where it gets good; sharing with people you care about.
If you’ve never tried Google+ or you have but you’re still unsure about it, check out this article which may just change your mind. Or you could just add me to your circles – now who wouldn’t want to see an exclusive photo of me as a kitty?!
The future of Instagram
3I have raved, praised and downright declared my undying love for Instagram both here and everywhere else you can find me online. I have used it since October 2010 and it’s more than just a place to share your iPhone (and now Android) photos. It’s a wonderful community with some amazing people that have gone on to become pretty solid friends of mine from around the world. I see it as Twitter for photos.
Two days ago news broke that Facebook have bought Instagram for a whopping $1bn. Straight away Twitter exploded, mostly with shock and then outrage from…well, just about everyone, myself included. I hate Facebook and have done long before it’s become cool to hate them. I had an account for less than 2 years and it brought absolutely nothing to my life. I deleted it over 3 years ago and haven’t missed it. I don’t hate it just because of the privacy issues, I hate it for the fact that when anything cool and individual comes along, the big blue corp throw a wad of cash at it and despite their initial claims of nothing changing we all know from past experience that it most probably will – remember Gowalla and Spotify?
While there will be no knee-jerk reaction from me and I won’t be deleting my Instagram account just yet, I am preparing myself to move elsewhere should Facebook make Instagram a Facebook-login service only like they did Spotify, or make similarly unfavourable changes. My gut instinct tells me that this will happen in time, with the use of ads in app to get back some of that huge ONE BILLION they forked out for it. I don’t think they will lock current Instagram users out of the app even without a FB account, but I’m sure profile photos will not be visible unless you are logged in via Facebook like so many apps out there, Draw Something and Spotify coming to mind. Should even a hint of that ‘lite’ profile occur unless you are linked up to their service then I’m outta there.
After a bit of searching around and some recommendations, I found PicYou which seems like a clone of Instagram – perfect. The filters aren’t as good as IG just yet, but the whole app feels very much like it and there are some things I prefer about PicYou over IG. It’s early days and only a handful of people I know from Instagram have installed the app but I’m hopeful that in time it will gather pace. Currently it is iPhone only.

Nest by Bluelounge
0In my last post I recommended the CableDrop by Bluelounge. Having discovered this clever little cable clip solution I decided to explore their other products and found they offer very simple but cool workspace management gadgets – just my kinda thing.
The next Bluelounge gadget on my list after the CableDrops was their Nest iPad stand. It seemed to do everything; iPad in portrait or landscape mode in the slide-out cradle or lie it down on the rubber lined cushions of the Nest for typing or drawing. Here’s some photos of how you can use it…
Such a nice simple design which looks great on your desk. I’ve had so many people on Twitter and Instagram ask me about it these past few days that I had to write a post about it.
Nest is €16.95 direct from Bluelounge or £14.99 at Amazon.co.uk and comes in a variety of colours.
CableDrop by Bluelounge
1Picture it. You’re charging your laptop, syncing your iPad, iPhone or other gadget and as you unplug the cable it’s a race against time to stop it from slinking down the back or side of the desk to the floor. Who knew that a company had heard our screams and created a clever and attractive solution to keep unruly cables in their rightful place.
By chance I happened upon Bluelounge last week where I discovered they make some really cool stuff which really makes sense. There I discovered the CableDrop. You can stick these onto your desktop, side of desk or even onto a wall and they simply grab your power and peripheral cords so that they won’t fall to the floor.
They come in a variety of colours; brights, muted, black and white. With my colourful decor in the home office I opted for the brights and here is how they look in action…
I also have another stuck to the back of the desk which holds my iPhone and iPad syncing cable in place.
You can buy them direct from Bluelounge for €12.95 or from Amazon.co.uk for £6.48 like I did.
Apps to fall in love with this February
1Love is in the air today, but don’t worry if you didn’t get a card from somebody special, your iPhone and iPad is the gift that keeps on giving and this February there are a few beautiful apps you can fall in love with.
Tweetbot for iPhone
I have been using Tweetbot for Twitter from Tapbots since it’s release day last April and it has gone from strength to strength, getting updates and new features added on a regular basis, unlike the free and almost forgotten Twitter for iPhone, iPad and Mac. The latest update, Tweetbot 2.0, landed last Wednesday with a refreshed UI and more new features to its already bulging catalogue which includes Push Notifications (at no extra charge unlike some apps!), Mute for hashtags, users and clients and so much more. If you love Twitter then you need Tweetbot to enhance the experience. £1.99 on the App Store [iTunes link]
Tweetbot for iPad
Shortly after Tweetbot for iPhone hit the streets, we had one more thing from Tapbots and it was what we’ve all been waiting for: the Tweetbot experience on the iPad. And it didn’t disappoint. Tapbots make beautiful apps – every pixel has been given that special tapbots love and attention. It has all the features of the iPhone version including push notifications, mute user/hashtag feature and so much more. It’s gorgeous. If you love Tweetbot on the iPhone then you’ll love this running alongside on your iPad: £1.99 [iTunes Link]
Clear for iPhone
You’ll have to wait just a teeny bit longer for this but not too long as tomorrow, Wednesday 15th February, is launch day for Clear for iPhone by Realmac Software. They make beautiful, functional apps for iOS and OS X and Clear looks to be no exception. They teased us with this rather lovely video demo a few weeks back during Macworld. I’m really excited about getting my hands on it. You can find out when Clear is released by following their Twitter account, @UseClear.
Demobilizer for Safari
0Picture it; I’m on my Mac and a friend posts a link on Twitter to their Flickr photo, from their iPhone. I click the link, Flickr opens up in the mobile version on my Mac. Ugh. I either close the tab or go into the address bar to change http://m.flickr.com to http://flickr.com. That’s a lot of messing around, right?
Thankfully those clever people at Junecloud have also experienced the same annoyance and have created a solution: Demobilizer, an extension for Safari.
Demobilizer takes mobile web pages and automatically redirects them to the full site. For example, m.flickr.com is redirected to www.flickr.com, and m.youtube.com is redirected to www.youtube.com. This can be pretty useful if you like to bookmark or Instapaper pages on your phone, then view them on your computer later. It’s also helpful when someone posts a link to a mobile site but you’re viewing it on your computer.
Grab the extension here!
Growl with Style
0I picked up a gorgeous style for Growl recently. It’s so gorgeous that I look forward to my apps bringing in notifications, just so I can see this visual delight appearing on my screen.
It’s the Black Glass Growl Style by Ryan Collins and I made a video to show it off in all it’s shiny reflective and magnificent splendour.
I have set this as my default growl notification style across all the apps that notify me. You can download the style here. If you don’t already own Growl, it is available in the Mac App Store for just $1.99/£1.49. Grab it here!
