Here, take my money
That line is directed towards o2. I have £159 happily sitting in my bank account ready to rub itself all over a black 16GB iPhone 3G…only they are in such short supply and I’m not even able to upgrade online or pick one up from a store near me. I’m sure that sounds familiar to a lot of people.
I have been going back and forth over the idea of buying an iPhone for weeks and I even put my head down a little last week when the 3G was released, keen not to get carried away and buy something just because there was a lot of talk about it. I’m sometimes sensible like that, much to my annoyance! Now since the iPhone talk has died down a little I have had time to think more now that it’s here and yes, I want one. One of the reasons (there are many, haha) is just being able to take one device out with me, rather than a phone and iPod. Plus, my current phone (a horribly bulky o2 XDA Mini S) is a couple of years old now so I’d be considering an upgrade to a sexier handset soon anyway, so I may aswell bring that forward. I’m on a £15 per month o2 SIMplicity contract with a 1 month duration, so I’m ready to rock when they get their stock
Since the June 9th announcement of the iPhone 3G I have saved quite a bit of money. Sometimes intentionally, but mostly because there’s nothing else that I really need or want, so it’s just been mounting up waiting for something special. I’d like Apple TV at some stage but to be honest that can wait as right now I’m having way too much fun playing with the apps bought through iTunes on my iPod touch to even think about watching television
The frustrating downside to this newfound “want one” is the lack of them in o2 stores or the online store itself. They have limited stock of the 8GB’s at a couple of o2 stores near me, but I’d much rather hold out for the 16GB as I can really go to town with my music library, videos, apps and info without worrying about the space being eaten up – and since it’s just £60 more for twice the capacity then it’s a no-brainer for me.
So, hopefully in the next few weeks there will be some good stock levels of the 16GB building up at the o2 online store. Their website states that they are expecting considerably more stock in their retail stores including a limited amount of 16GB’s from Friday 25th July (two days after my 35th birthday *shush*) and soon after that they will be opening up their online upgrade shop for existing and new customers.
One thing I am wondering about is this: I have bought around 4 games from the App Store in iTunes and installed them on my iPod touch, so when I get an iPhone does this mean I can simply install them on there or will I have to buy them again?

You can transfer your apps to as many iPhones or iPod touches as you want. Just like music and videos.
Good luck on finding an iPhone! They are amazing!

I skipped the original iPhone last year since I didn’t want to unlock it and other hassles.
With the release of the iPhone 3G and my contract expired with T-mobile, my mind urged me to get one.
Moving from the iPod touch/S60 Smartphone/Sidekick 3 to the iPhone 3G, it makes me appreciate the iPhone 3G even more so. Everything I need is on there.
Will you get the black or the white model? That will be an awesome birthday gift.
P.S. Time to think about the iPhone case as well. I noticed that mine has already scratched on the chrome area by keys.

Hi Kenneth. I want a black one. The white looks very nice from photos I’ve seen on Flickr, but I’d prefer the black.
I wasn’t too interested in the iPhone last year. My main priority was to upgrade my computer and buy the iMac. But now the iPhone is even more attractive and since I really want to upgrade my handset then it’s the perfect time.
I’d love to get my iPhone on my Birthday, but that’s looking unlikely with the stock levels the way they are. Hopefully the o2 online store will open again for upgrades soon so I can get one – but I think I will need to be quick if the last online rush is anything to go by (demand killed the o2 website, many people unable to get their orders in)

I’ve been checking the o2 website for retail store stock levels over the weekend and I visited two o2 stores today – no iPhones. I think I will wait until there are significant stock levels on the website or in retail stores without the rush as clearly they are coming out the shop quicker than they go in.
Thank god I have the iPod touch to keep me entertained for now.

I feel sorry for you. I Travelled 60 Miles to get my iPhone! and they only had 8GB so i just had to go with it! Im excited for you getting one though. I Promise, its worth the wait.

Hey Daniel
Ah yes, I’m sure the iPhone is definitely worth the wait. I was really hoping to get one today, but now I’m just going to be patient as there are a lot of people in the same boat and many have been trying to get one since the release day.

Since it’s still a phone, you want it to be as stable as it can. The current 2.0 firmware/iTunes 7.7 is buggy. Hopefully, when you buy your shinny iPhone 3G, Apple push out a newer firmware for it.

@Daniel: Aw damn, that sucks
Hope you get a spanking new one that works soon!
@Kenneth: I’ve been hearing about people experiencing problems with the firmware, particularly lag when typing on the keyboard. Hope they get the new firmware out soon. And really hoping o2 will have online stock next week!

2 people in my office have had theirs (total will probably be 4 or more by the end of next week), they got them by getting on waiting lists at all the CPW & O2 shops within the surrounding area.
They are very nice phones, although they don’t tick enough boxes for me to make the jump from nokia, i’m sure they will in time though.

I have to wait until March to get mine…
I’m tied to my current O2 contract until then… It’s a bit of a wait I can tell you.
But hopefully by then the demand for the iPhone 3G will be a bit lower and I’ll be able to get my hands on one with some ease… unless Steve Jobs decides to do something new in March…

Keri: Ah, I didn’t know you could be added to a waiting list at o2. I am holding out as best I can for the online stock to come in as I’d prefer to do the activation myself, but we’ll see what happens if there’s no stock in over the next 7 days or so.
Gareth: Oof, that is a long wait
I do wonder what treats Uncle Steve will have in store for us over the coming months. Then everyone will be talking about that instead of the iPhone no doubt!
