A year with…o2 Broadband
In a couple of weeks time it’ll be 12 months since I switched to o2 Broadband. I was reminded of this today when I received a letter from my old provider, BT Broadband, begging me to go back to them and in return they’ll offer me some perks like the BT Home Hub and £7.95 for the first three months. What? And leave reliable o2 that I pay £7.50 to per month all the time? “No!” would be the short and polite answer to that.
During my 12 months with o2 Broadband I have been asked about the service and reliability from a lot of people who wanted to jump ship from their current ISP. Given that o2 is a broadband newcomer at barely 12 months old itself (I joined a week after it was introduced) people were naturally curious about whether it could deliver the goods given it’s low price (£7.50 per month to existing Pay Monthly and PAYG customers for the Standard 8MB unlimited package). So, after 12 months I thought I could give my thoughts and opinions.
I can’t fault o2 Broadband at all. It certainly hasn’t experienced any teething troubles. In 12 months the only time I can remember a significant downtime was earlier in the year when service was down for a few hours. I called customer support and after getting through extremely quickly I didn’t even have to explain what the issue was – they already knew and assured me they were working on it. This isn’t customer support I’m used to. My experiences with BT Broadband were abysmal and the support would have liked me to think the issue was with my own computer – yeeees, my computer was causing the broadband to be completely out at the exchange
In the past year I have recommended o2 to a good few people – some joined, some didn’t. Those who didn’t decided to stay with their current ISP after they were promised better speeds, but are now mostly regretting their decision because their service has continued to decline. Of those that did join on my recommendation, the last time I spoke to some of them they’d just been turned on by o2 and were thrilled to be whizzing through the intertubes at a vast rate. To avoid repeating what I’ve already said, you can read my other posts on o2 Broadband here and here. Everything still stands.
So, to briefly sum things up…
Reliability of Service: I have had no connection issues. I get around 3Mbps which is double the speed I got with BT (which I was paying three times more for, incidentally). Unfortunately my line isn’t capable of much more than that and it does the job, until all the horrid old copper lines are finally replaced with fancy new ones by British Telecom!
Customer Support: Excellent, 10/10, outstanding…you get the idea. Call Centres based in the UK, swift answer, friendly, speedy resolution of any issues since they have full control of my o2 Wireless Box from their end. Brilliant support for Mac users. Faultless.
Router: I have the “old” o2 wireless box, a Thomson 780. I call it the ugly one since the new ones are smaller and white – much prettier. But, I haven’t had any problems with this and the Admin interface is very user-friendly and detailed.
If you’re thinking of switching to o2 Broadband and have any queries that I haven’t already covered then shoot me a question in the comments

Thanks for the write up Sam. I so wish I had a choice, but Karoo (you suck!) means that I have only one choice. And at £30 per month for 4mb does not sit with me well at all!
Roll on fibre to the home and in Hull too!

Ps I see Ciao is back, did you sort it all out?

Hey Jon. Shelling out £30 per month for 4MB would break my heart. I hope you guys get a choice soon – seems very unfair to me
Yeah, all sorted with Ciao in the end.

good post Sam. I’m looking to change my broadband provider as well, and have been looking at o2’s offers, along with some other providers. It looks like they might be the way froward!

It breaks my heart too – I’m more angry and fed up to be honest though. Grrrrr!!!!

I bought O2 Broadband 16Mb (£10pm) this year when I noticed that I got a discount with my O2 phone contract.
I was amazed at how easy it was to setup (had Blueyonder since 2001 at parents house) and how fast it is, being close to an O2 exchange is great!
I too have the Thompson box which is lying at a strange angle in a cabinet… Its a shame that I don’t get Wireless N with it

Hey Alan, glad to hear you’re as happy with o2 Broadband as I am! Just when I thought all ISP’s were the same, o2 came along and rewrote the rule book

Forgot to add, O2 bought Be Broadband to get their service started. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Be_Unlimited

However, there are now big problems for a lot of O2 users who are being disconnected every 5 mins.

Not good at all. UK wide. O2/Bethere have gone from awesome to awful!

No problems here. Looks like the problem was caused by this http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/10/23/global_crossing_docklands_break/ – so appears to be a temporary issue affecting certain areas, not UK wide.

I’m just picking a provider for a new house next year, and it was going to be Be*, before I remembered you’d had good experiences with O2 (I didn’t realise they were the same company, in a weird way).
It’ll probably be O2 now: £9.79/month for 20 meg down & 1.3 up is very impressive. Thanks for the post

You’re welcome, Alex. Hope you have great experiences with o2, too

I have been on O2 for two months. was just about OK, though not as good as with SKY (who I hate!) to begin with but speeds have gone down and down.
O2 say it is due to people abusing the unlimited downloads and that they can’t do anything to help. They also say that tests show that I am getting 4.5Mb to my router, which is near the maximum I can expect. If this is true, why do I get a max of 1Mb to my laptop, whether its wired or wireless? surely its a problem with the router? O2 say they have decided its the network problem and they won’t try to fix it.
I have been with O2 for my mobile phone for a while and I like them, but now I feel they have let me down.
Very disappointed and I can’t recommend them to anyone

Interesting experiences Clive, do you have the white Thompson router? I’m on the 20Mb package (was 16Mb) and I get around 12Mb average and thats to a busy city centre exchange. Its faster when O2 have their equipment in the exchange – perhaps they are just using BT equipment in your exchange hence the slow speed. Max of 1Mb to the laptop is strange – are you using a Mac or PC? If PC check that your antivirus or firewall isn’t affecting it. Get somebody else to bring their computer and attach it to your router, if the same then you have an issue with the router.

Thanks for your reply, I have tried the wired AND wireless connection with desktop PC’s, Laptops, iphones, my Macbook Pro and also friends laptops and all are the same. ie very slow speeds. O2 insist it is due to abuse of their ‘unlimited’ download package. At the same time they say that they can see that 4-5Mb is reaching the router. Seems likely it’s a router problem to me too, but they won’t do anything. It’s disappointing as I have always liked O2. They say I can switch provider for no charge but ideally I would like them to at least try replacing the router first.
At present I am looking round for another provider I feel I can trust. NOT easy!!!

Oh one think you could try is updating or downgrading the router firmware, I believe there are a few forums which discuss this.
I’ve had great service from them, but twice the routers have let me down (although you can buy and use your own router)
I wonder if you could borrow another router and try that? I’d love to use my Airport Extreme but I would need an ADSL modem
I don’t see why O2 won’t give you another router, and I don’t see how you can abuse a 4-5Mb connection…..
